Obituary

Roy Pityinger, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and sibling, passed away on July 17, 2023 in Kearny, New Jersey. He was born on January 22, 1953 and raised in the vibrant community of Jersey City to Catherine and Stephen Pityinger. He is survived by his three siblings Diane (husband Earl), Brenda (husband Denny) and Steve (wife Helen). Roy led his life with enthusiasm, love, and a deep devotion to his family. Although his departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, Roy's memory will forever be cherished.

Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Lana, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter and luscious bottles of homemade sangria. They enjoyed their routine–laundry on Fridays and a Roy-breakfast-special whether that was a home cooked meal or going to their favorite diner on the weekend.

Family was of highest importance to Roy, and he found immense joy and pride in being a father to his four children Allison (husband Kirk), Drew (wife Tracy), Brett (wife Erika), and Yuri (wife Stephanie).  From childhood to adulthood, Roy enjoyed quality moments with his kids - sports games, important school events, celebratory milestones and the small, cherished moments in between.

His fatherly presence extended to his children’s spouses by forming a special bond with each. As seven-time grandfather to Hailey, Bryn, DJ, Elle, Brooke, Theo and Sophia, Roy continued to be blessed and surrounded by an abundance of family, love and happiness. Roy proudly cheered at his grandkids’ sporting events, sang gleefully at their birthday celebrations and graciously engaged in their imaginative games. Thankfully, Roy’s admiration and unwavering support for his grandchildren will be fondly remembered through a plethora of photographs, videos and voicemails.

Professionally, Roy dedicated many years to both Nabisco and USPS. In his later years, Roy worked as a security guard at the Kearny Town Hall. Coworkers described him as warm, merry and incredibly ambitious.

Roy had a great passion for sports. He was an avid runner and successfully participated in the Boston Marathon. He loved watching a wide variety of sports – baseball, football, hockey, soccer, tennis and softball. However, Roy found favoritism in the New York Mets and Jets, the Baltimore Orioles. Though he enjoyed the excitement of a nail-biting football game, Roy also loved the thrill of a good, suspenseful book.

Roy Pityinger's legacy will forever be carried within the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that his memory will continue to resonate through the lives he touched. Lastly, as Roy would say at the end of all his voicemails– “I love you, guys.”

A celebration of Roy's life will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 from 10am to 1pm at Alvarez Memorial Home located at 684 Kearny Ave, Kearny, NJ 07032.
