Obituary

Santiago Quinonez (Sandy) passed away on August 30, 2023 in Westfield, NJ after losing a battle to Parkinson’s Disease.

Sandy was born August 4, 1934 in Lares, Puerto Rico.

Juana Perez (Juanita) and Sandy met in  Lares in 1950 and married on December 11, 1955 and later moved to Newark, NJ.

Well known by all as a hardworking man, Sandy was always striving to provide more for his family. He began working at The Arch Restaurant in Livingston, NJ where he started as a waiter and was promoted to a bartender. He soon opened his own bar Sandy’s Tavern, in Newark, where he was the proud owner for over 35 years.  Sandy devoted his life to the success of his business and through that he met lifelong friends. Sandy’s time running the Tavern  provided him with a wealth of the most interesting stories which he loved to retell to all of his grandchildren.

Sandy and Juanita had the vision to purchase a home in Kearny, NJ and raised a lovely family together.

Sandy is survived by his loving wife Juanita, his children Nancy Mejia of Kearny, NJ; Doris Sutich and her husband John Sutich of West New York, NJ; Alicia Ebelhardt of Kearny, NJ; Santiago Jr. Quinonez and his wife Julie Quinonez of Swedesboro, NJ; Juan Quinonez and his wife Libby Quinonez of St. Louis, MO; and Daniel Quinonez and Kerilynn Sims of Alexandria, VA.

Sandy is survived by his loving grandchildren Jason (Kimberly), Ashley (Andrew), Michael, Daniel (Elizabeth Ann), John Jr. (Makenna), Alyssa, Lindsey, Sydney, Jack, Henry, Henrietta, Julian, Andrew, Abigail, Daniel Jr. and Emily and his six great grandchildren Hailey, Tyler, Christian, Jordan, Charles,  and Abigail.

A celebration of Mass will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St Stephen's Roman Catholic Church located at 141 Washington Ave, Kearny, NJ 07032.  Church will open at 10:30 AM for family and friends to offer their condolences.  The burial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ 07031.
